In a musical landscape often accused of playing it safe, The Maggie Pills are a necessary disruption. Fronted by Argentinian firebrand Delfi Sorondo and powered by Venezuelan drummer Mario Perez, this Melbourne-based duo strips rock back to its vital core: a fierce collision of indie rawness and punk urgency. Formed in late 2019, just weeks after Sorondo and Perez arrived in Australia, The Maggie Pills channel their experiences as migrants into songs that tackle discrimination, sexism and environmental destruction, while exploring friendship, grief and resilience. Their intense live performances and raw emotional honesty have built a powerful connection with audiences. Their self-produced debut double album, Hope is Risk, earned a nomination for Best Heavy Work at the 2023 Music Victoria Awards and a spot on the Australian Music Prize longlist. They followed it with Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss, nominated for Best Independent Heavy Album at the 2026 AIR Awards. The Maggie Pills are road-tested, having stormed stages including Northcote Social Club, Max Watts and The Croxton, while selling out headline shows at The Bergy Bandroom and The Night Cat. They’ve shared bills with international cult heroes Black Lips (USA) and Shihad, as well as Australian heavyweights The Living End, The Peep Tempel, The Mark of Cain and Cable Ties. With two EPs, two albums and a growing catalogue of singles, the band have received national support from triple j, Double J, 3RRR, PBS and 4ZZZ, alongside coverage from Rolling Stone Australia, The Music, Tone Deaf and Blunt Magazine. The Maggie Pills aren’t just another band on the circuit. They are a vital, energetic force reminding us what rock music should feel like: urgent, inclusive and unforgettable.
